Tiling a wall can transform any space, whether you're sprucing up your kitchen, bathroom, or adding a feature wall in the living room. However, starting in the right place is crucial to ensure a professional finish. In this guide, we'll walk you through the essential steps on where to start tiling a wall, helping you to achieve seamless and visually appealing results.

Step 1: Planning Your Layout

Before you mix any adhesive or cut a single tile, planning your layout is crucial. Measure your wall and mark the centre point. Most professional tilers recommend beginning your tile application from the centre of the wall. This approach ensures that cut tiles are of equal size on opposite ends of the wall, creating a balanced and symmetrical look. Use a chalk line or laser level to mark vertical and horizontal guide lines from this centre point.

Step 2: Checking Tile Fit

Place your tiles along the wall with spacers, starting from the centre line to the ends of the wall. This dry layout helps you visualise the end result and adjust for any small spaces near the wall edges where a full tile won't fit. If you end up with less than half a tile width near the edges, shift your centre line to balance the layout.

Step 3: Preparing the Surface

A clean, smooth, and stable surface is essential for tiling. Remove any wallpaper, loose paint, or old adhesive. Fill in holes and cracks, and sand any uneven areas. For bathrooms or other wet areas, ensure your wall is waterproofed to prevent moisture damage.

Step 4: Applying Adhesive

Mix your tile adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a notched trowel, apply an even layer of adhesive over a section of the wall. Start from the centre and work your way out, only spreading as much adhesive as you can cover with tiles within 10 minutes to prevent it from drying out.

Step 5: Setting the Tiles

Place your first tile at the intersection of your guide lines, pressing it firmly into the adhesive. Insert spacers on all sides of the tile to ensure even gaps for grouting. Continue placing tiles outward from the centre, checking with a level periodically to make sure the tiles are flush and even.

Step 6: Cutting and Fitting Tiles

For edges and corners, you'll need to cut tiles to fit. Measure the space and mark your tiles accordingly. Using a tile cutter for straight cuts or a tile saw for curved cuts, carefully cut each tile. Be sure to wear safety glasses during this step.

Starting your tiling project at the right spot on the wall is key to a successful installation. By following these steps, you ensure that your tiling work looks professional and evenly distributed. Remember, the time spent preparing and planning your tiling project will pay off in the quality of the finish.
